Sprout of the Month ...

Chickpeas

Sprouted seeds and beans, particularly organic sprouts, are the ultimate fast food - totally tasty, full of freshness and highly nutritious.

Delicious sprouted chickpeas are packed with vitamins A and C and are a good source of amino acids, carbohydrate and fibre.

How to Sprout Chickpeas

Soak them in loads (yes loads, they're like sponges) of warmish water, for 8-12 hours.  Rinse thoroughly, drain and pop them in your sprouter - a kitchen colander would do!  Keep them out of direct sun and rinse and drain them 2-3 times a day for a couple of days, by which time most should have sprouted little tails around 1cm long.  They're quite delicious at this stage, but it's your call.  Have a taste and, if you want them to sprout a bit more, just continue with the rinsing and draining 2-3 times a day for another day or 2 and, hey presto.

A small handful of delicious sprouted chickpeas make a tasty and nutritious snack and they'll add a sweet nutty flavour and texture to soups, stews and curries, but, here's an idea ..... have you ever thought of adding a bit of extra crunch to your hummus by using your yummy home sprouted organic chickpeas rather than tinned ones?
