- Quick growing
- Very reliable and popular
- Mild flavour which intensifies as the bulb grows
Spring onions are also known as salad onions or, to give them their proper name, scallions. They are very easy to grow and are the ideal crop for filling in spare gaps that arise in the vegetable patch.
Sowing Instructions
Sow: Very thinly (1-2cm apart) around 1cm deep from March to August directly into prepared soil. Cover with a thin layer of compost. They prefer a fine, well drained soil but, particularly if you’re using them as a filler, they don’t always get what they want! Alternatively, sow organic spring onion seed directly into pots on the patio or balcony. Sow successionally, a few seeds every 2 weeks, to give you a continuous supply throughout the summer months.
Aftercare: Water well in dry conditions. It’s as easy as that!
Harvest: After around 6-8 weeks. Pick alternate ones to give the others left in the ground room to grow on for a further week or two.
Cooking Tips
Spring onions are well known as a salad ingredient and for their use in oriental dishes, but they also come in very handy when you want that onion flavour but are running short on time. Just rinse and snip straight into the pan! |
