Sowing Instructions

Runner beans are easy to grow and require minimum care.

Sow: April under glass, or, as they are frost tender, May to Jun directly into well prepared soil, to a depth of around 5cm.

Plant out: from May, when all risk of frost has passed, 30cm (1’) apart in a sunny, or part shaded, sheltered spot, in well drained, fertile soil.  Prepare a wigwam or other support structure prior to planting.

Aftercare: Encourage the growing plant to twist round the support and pinch out the tip when it reaches the top of the support.  Continue to water in dry conditions and more regularly once flowers appear.  At this time, you could also feed with a liquid fertiliser every couple of weeks, or mulch with a good layer of organic matter.

Harvest: July to September while the bean pods are young and tender.  They should be picked when they are slender and smooth, before you can see the outline of beans inside.

Tip: Regular picking will encourage the plant to continue producing and extend the season.

Cooking Tips

Top, tail and rinse.  Check for a fibrous string running down each side and remove with a sharp knife (this shouldn’t be present if the beans have been picked when young and tender).  Cut beans into evenly sized chunks or ribbons and boil or steam for 6-10 minutes.  Delicious served as a side dish with butter and pepper.

Storing

Runner beans freeze well.  Chop, blanch (cook for 3 minutes in boiling water then rinse immediately in cold water).  Dry off, then store in the freezer for up to 3 months.
