Sowing Instructions
Sow: Very thinly (aim for a couple of seeds every 15-20cm if you can) around 1.5cm deep from March to July directly into prepared soil in a position where your organic lettuce plants will get some shade in the hottest part of the day. Alternatively, early sowings can be made indoors and plugs planted out when the weather warms up. Cover seed lightly with soil, firm in and water. Cut and come again lettuce, where individual leaves are harvested, is ideally suited to being grown in containers or window boxes. Lettuce are quite happy to grow as companion plants to other, taller plants. This can provide them with a bit of cooling shade on hot summer days, when too much hot sun can make them run to seed. Sow a few seeds every 3 weeks to give you a continuous supply throughout the summer months.
Aftercare: Thin out to one seedling every 15-20cm. Water well in dry conditions, taking care that those lettuces planted under taller plants are receiving their fair share of water. Lack of water can also make lettuce run to seed. If at all possible, water in the early part of the day so that the leaves are generally dry by the evening.
Harvest: from June (around 12 weeks after sowing), although you may be able to sneak a few Lollo Rosso leaves before then! Test cos lettuce for maturity by gently pressing down on the top of the plant to see if you can detect a ‘heart’. Harvest cut and come again varieties by snipping their outer leaves off at the base. This encourages the plant to continue to grow new leaves from the centre.
