Sowing Instructions

Marketmore is a ridge (outdoor) variety of organic cucumber.  It can be successfully grown outdoors or, if you prefer, under cover (greenhouse, poly-tunnel, etc.).

Sow: March to May under glass, in seed compost 1.5cm deep, or, once all danger of frosts have passed, directly into a fertile (non-acidic), sunny, sheltered seed bed, around 3cm deep, pointed end down.  A cloche (a large plastic bottle with the base cut off is ideal) is recommended for the protection of outdoor sown seedlings initially.  Harden off seedlings sown indoors prior to planting out, with as little root disturbance as possible.

Aftercare: Continue to water regularly, add a mulch of well-rotted compost and, once flowers appear, treat to an organic tomato plant feed every couple of weeks.  Pinching out the growing tip once the plant has developed 6 sets of leaves from the main stem will encourage the production of side shoots.  Provide staking as required and step up the watering once fruit is setting.

Pollination: Marketmore will produce both male and female flowers.  Male flowers should not be removed from ridge cucumber plants.  Insects will pollinate the female flowers as long as they are allowed access, via ventilation during the warm parts of the day, to plants grown under glass.

Harvest: from July, when fruits are up to 20cm long.  Pick regularly to encourage new fruits to form. Rub off any spines or peel before enjoying sliced in salads and sandwiches, cubed in couscous or cooked like courgettes – yes, apparently so!
