Derby Day is a fast growing, early summer, ballhead cabbage which produces medium round green heads with sweet tender hearts and is resistant to bolting.
Red Drumhead is an easy to grow and very popular red cabbage, with solid round heads from compact plants, which can be enjoyed raw, cooked or pickled.
Sowing Instructions
Sow: Derby Day can be sown from mid February (for June harvest) in pots or trays under glass. Alternatively, seeds can be sown outdoors, 1.5cm deep and around 15cm apart from mid-March. Red Drumhead can be sown from the beginning of March under glass or outdoors from April until mid-May. Successional sowings are recommended for a longer harvesting period.
Transplant: After around 5 weeks, when seedlings are large enough to handle, into well prepared soil in a reasonably sunny spot. Outdoor sown seedlings should be thinned to around 45cm apart.
Aftercare: Protect seedlings from birds, particularly sparrows! Water well in dry conditions and treat to an organic fertilizer from time to time. Remove outer leaves which turn yellow to avoid infection spreading.
Harvest: when the hearts are firm, Derby Day from June to August, Red Drumhead from September to November, by cutting with a sharp knife close to ground level.
Tip: Try cutting a 1cm deep cross into the stump of cabbage plants harvested early in the season and you should be rewarded with a second crop of delicious mini cabbages.
Cooking Tips
Cabbage stores well, however, as it is an excellent source of vitamin C, you’ll get maximum nutritional value if you eat it as soon as possible after harvesting. Both varieties can be enjoyed raw in salads and coleslaws, shredded into stir fries or lightly steamed or boiled and served with pepper and butter (try adding a little vinegar to the cooking water for a sharp taste and to keep red drumhead’s colour). Red Drumhead is also excellent when pickled.
