P4 is a water storer come soil conditioner which promises to improve germination and root growth, as well as aiding drainage and reducing watering by up to 75%.  Each 10g sachet will form approximately 4 litres of P4 gel which, in turn, will treat around 10 litres of compost. 

So, it's eco-friendly, inert, and therefore suitable for organic gardening, and it saves you time.  Now that's got to be worth a try!
