GROWING INSTRUCTIONS
In simple terms, you soak them, rinse and drain them twice a day, and then ..... you eat them!
SOAK the seeds or beans (most need soaked for between 8 and 24 hours) in loads of fresh water to wake them up.
RINSE the sprouts well in lashings of cool fresh water at least twice a day to keep your sprout crop clean and healthy. Let it rain!
DRAIN well after each rinsing to prevent the poor little fellows from drowning and to stop the rot! So, shake 'em and spin 'em.
EAT! Your sprouted seeds will be ready in 2 - 12 days, depending on the variety. They can then be stored in plastic bags in the fridge for up to 3 days if you're not ready to use them immediately.
EQUIPMENT
You can use anything from a jam jar to a purpose made, tiered sprouter. The vital thing to bear in the mind is that your little shoots need to breathe, so no locking them into an airtight container.
JARS, covered with muslin, have traditionally been used for sprouting. Although they allow less air circulation than purpose made sprouters, so long as you live by the rule less is more (about a teaspoon of seeds per jam jar), and are careful to invert the jar after rinsing, to assist with drainage, you'll be enjoying crunchy shoots in no time.
TRAYS are commonly used for sprouting and are particularly suitable for sprouts which need light. Purpose made sprouting tray systems are normally stackable, allowing croppings of a variety of seeds and beans (and saving space), but any type of tray with drainage holes would do.
BAGS, normally made from hemp, allow air circulation and good drainage and are particularly suitable for sprouting beans and grains which don't need light. You just dip them to rinse your sprouts and then hang them to drain, remembering to move the contents regularly to prevent them from rooting.
Finally, your little shoots need to be kept fairly cosy (around 21°C, that's 70 in old money!) but generally out of direct sunlight.
