Nordmann Fir, with its glossy, rich-green, child and pet friendly needles, is hardy, generally disease resistent and easy to grown.
Keep your wee Nordmann Fir Christmas tree cool and the roots well watered... and please plant as soon as possible.
If your tree is intended for indoor use in future festive seasons, growing it on in a container will limit the height, make it easier to lift, keep the roots intact and reduce needle shed. Select a suitable first pot, around 12cm/5" diameter, add stones or broken crockery to the bottom to help with drainage, and fill with compost mixed with some grit or sand. Plant your tree, firming it in, water well and move to a sunny, fairly sheltered spot initially. Re-pot in the dormant season as required. When bringing your tree indoors each Christmas, allow it to gradually acclimatise by moving it to a cold outhouse for a few days beforehand and try do this afterwards too.
If planting your tree in the ground, select an open space and break up the soil. Add some grit, plant your tree and heel it in to remove any air gaps. Trim to a keep a nice uniform shape in the dormant season. Nordmann is a fairly slow growing, yet long-lived and ultimately a tall fir species. Once established, ground grown trees will sprout around 75cm per year, eventually reaching a height of up to 40m, so plant well away from buildings and power lines! If you have the room, you might want to consider planting a new sapling each year and cutting the oldest one as it reaches your preferred Christmas tree height.
